Katalyst was pleased to share our research and analysis on industry structure, trade flows and global workforce structure with the TRUSTex project, in support of their work on implementing new EU Extended Producer Responsibility regulations.
These regulations are part of an effort to promote circularity and reduce textile waste. It is estimated that less than 1% of textiles globally are recycled into new textiles, and that the EU generates 12 millon tonnes of textile waste annually.
The new rules require companies that make textiles available on the EU market to cover the costs for collecting, sorting and recycling textile products.
The rules cover textile products such as clothing and accessories, blankets, bed linen, curtains, hats, footwear, mattresses and carpets.
TRUSTex is a Horizon Europe Innovation Action bringing together 19 partners across 10 European countries to advance sustainable textiles through innovative Extended Producer Responsibility schemes. Led by the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), the project combines multi-disciplinary collaboration, cutting-edge research, industry expertise, and policy development to transform the European textile sector.
